Responsible for assisting the hemodialysis nurse by performing delegated tasks, including accessing AV fistula or graft, the initiation, monitoring and termination of hemodialysis treatments for the hemodialysis patient in the acute/chronic hemodialysis unit, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Responsible for the mixing and performing quality control checks of the bicarbonate loop system, dialysis machines and portable RO's as per unit policy. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in The Methodist Mission, Vision and Values.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Possession of current CPR certification.
Certified under a State Certification program or a national commercial certification program or obtain certification within 18 months of employment.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Knowledge of the care of ESRD/dialysis patients as would be acquired through one year's experience in a dialysis or nephrology unit or knowledge of the care of patients as would be acquired through two years' experience in a patient care setting, or completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant Course and completion of a Certified Hemodialysis Technician Course.
Basic knowledge of intravenous therapy methods as would be acquired through experience in a hemodialysis setting or completion of LLT course or of a formal intravenous therapy certification course or other related experience.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations and ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as patient records, as would be acquired through completion of high school.
Ability to understand and perform moderately complex tasks such as mixing bicarbonate and granuflo and performing quality control checks on water system, bicarbonate, and granuflo.
Ability to cannulate AV graft or fistula as acquired through venipuncture training or one-year experience in hemodialysis unit or setting.
Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of frequent complications (i.e. hypotension, cramping) in dialysis patients during the dialysis treatment and respond appropriately until nurse responds.
Ability to communicate verbally with patients, patients families, associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgement. Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of workflow.
